Total upkeep keeps telling me I need to fix a problem. Under Backups it tells me I need to configure remote storage. I don’t know what this is or what I need to do. I’ve gone to the support pages and can’t come up with any answers that I understand. What do I need to do in plain english.
January 30, 2020 at 2:50 pm #30746supportGuestHi James, thank you for contacting us!
Total Upkeep is recommending a remote storage location to help ensure that you have an available backup in the event of a catastrophic failure on your server, which could effect any backups stored locally. Failures of that magnitude are rare, but it never hurts to be prepared!
This guide from our Support Center demonstrates how you can use the tools provided in Total Upkeep Premium to configure remote storage locations for your backups.
I hope that the guide helps you get your remote locations configured and please let us know if there is anything else that we can do to assist you.
January 30, 2020 at 3:06 pm #30747James OleskyGuestThis answer tells me nothing. I don’t know anything about what is being discussed. I’ve read the support page. It’s the same stuff I get. I don’t understand the subject at all and you information with FTPs and XYZ and google this and amazon that means nothing to me. Please come down to my level. I want to fix this problem but have zero knowledge of the subject. Do these services cost money, do I need to go somewhere to sign up, you say I can do this with my hosting company. HOW!
January 31, 2020 at 2:31 pm #30748supportGuestHi James,
The FTP option allows you to configure
another server as the storage location for your backups and uses an FTP
account to transfer backups automatically from your website’s server to
the storage location. Using this option will require two separate
servers, so it might not be the best option to use since it requires
that you have access to an additional server.Amazon S3
is another solution you can use for remote storage, but that is also a
Premium service that will require an additional purchase.Google
Drive is the remote storage option that I use the most since you can
use it for free as long as you have a Gmail account. Google drive can
be used to store up to 15 GB of data in free accounts and this is the
option I recommend to use for remote storage. Configuring Google Drive
is also the easiest of the 3 to do and all you need to do is login to
your Google account when prompted during the set up process to authorize
it as your remote storage location. Please let me know if you have any other questions about setting up remote storage locations!
February 1, 2020 at 12:30 am #30749James OleskyGuestWhy can’t I store my backups on the host server I use for my site? If something happens to my site I’ll just rebuild it again. It isn’t a business. I’m running this site as a service to my Condo Community. I could decide to quit the site at any time and I would just erase the whole thing and start over. Can I get rid of the fix it problem somehow by storing my backup on my host computer. I thought I was already doing that.
February 4, 2020 at 12:46 pm #30750supportGuestHi James,
The prompt from Total Upkeep to configure remote storage is just a suggestion and if you want to store your backups on your web server instead of using a remote location then there is no need to take the additional steps in getting it set up.
I created a feature request on your behalf with our development team to make that notice dismissible and I hope that they can get that implemented in a future release of Total Upkeep Premium.
Please let us know if there is anything else that we can do to assist you.
