Why do I need to declare a charset?
A charset, or character encoding, is the set of characters (i.e letters, numbers, punctuation marks, etc.) a web page will use to show its content. Selecting a charset helps browsers understand the rules for correctly interpreting your website and ensures that the content is rendered as expected.
How to Declare a Charset
A charset can be declared by setting an HTML <meta> tag with the “charset” value like. Here is an example of declaring the charset: <meta charset=”utf-8”>. This <meta> tag should be placed immediately following the opening <head> tag.
Why use UTF-8?
Web pages can only use a single charset on each page. UTF-8 is the recommended charset to use on the Internet because it supports most languages and can be read by virtually any browser. UTF-8 is also widely supported by the content management systems, such as WordPress, and databases used to generate and store website content. Websites using UTF-8 do not require additional resources or software for translating data into different charsets.
