I have been dealing with a recurring ‘error connecting to the database’ with my website, as well as the occasional internal server error 500. The error only happens when I edit a page, then click update.
After much frustration and carefully testing each plugin I finally realized the Boldgrid ‘post and page builder’ is what’s causing this error. When I disable the plugin, I no longer get this error and am able to update pages as normal.
I really need to use this plugin because my entire site was laid out using it, and if I disable it then the site looks like crap. I don’t understand why this plugin is suddenly causing me issues because it used to work fine. I even ‘rolled back’ to a previous version of the plugin that worked fine for me, thinking that maybe the updated version was the problem, but even once I rolled back the plugin kept creating this error.
I guess my question is: is there a list of plugins known to conflict with the Boldgrid Post and Page builder plugin? If not, is there anyway I can go about figuring out which plugins might be conflicting? As I said, the Post and Page Builder worked fine for me before, so I can only imagine that it must be conflicting with another plugin.
If anyone has any info or advice, I would greatly appreciate it. This issue has been plaguing me for weeks and I’m at my wit’s end.

I’m sorry to see that you are experiencing issues while using the BoldGrid Post and Page builder. There is not a comprehensive list of plugins that BoldGrid does not “play nicely” with, however, due to the way most builders are coded, having more than one builder-type plugin activated/installed can sometimes cause conflicts between them.
Typically, I recommend disabling each plugin one by one. Once you disable a plugin, try to replicate the issue. Eventually you may find which one is causing the issue, if that is the case.
Have you tried running a “Check/Repair” on your database? This is typically done with your hosted server. I recommend contacting them in the event you need further assistance with that.

I’m the same person who originally posted the question (I forgot my password and for whatever reason the email to reset it never went through so I had to use a different account).
Here is a list of all the plugins I am currently using. Can you identify any that you think might be causing the problem?

Yoast SEOThe reason why I ask is because, I cannot replicate this error reliably every time. Sometimes I will deactive a plugin (keeping Boldgrid Post and Page Builder activated, since I’m trying to figure out which plugin conflicts with it), and the problem will stop. I will do several rounds of testing and not see the error. Then I will reactive the plugin and do several rounds of testing again, and I’m still not getting the error!
Then at some unknown point the error begins again and I’m back to square one.
I’ve tried running a check/repair on my database and everything is fine. I made sure the username and password matched in my wp-config file so it isn’t that either.
I went back and forth with BoldGrid/InMotion who eventually told me that the error was occurring because our site was taking up too much disk space and our site wasn’t optimized. Using the GMetrix website I did a ton of work on optimizing our website, including setting up the WP Fastest Cache, and I also deleted a bunch of unneeded files. This seemed to help the problem for a while, but inevitably it came back, so now I am not sure that this was the problem at all. Especially like I said, it seems like the Post and Page Builder is definitely part of the problem. I wish I could just stop using it!
Any further help or advice would be appreciated. Every time I contact InMotion/Boldgrid directly, I get nowhere.
December 4, 2018 at 5:28 pm #29400christophermGuestI’d suggest taking a closer at “All in One WP Security” and “Blog Designer – Post and Widget”. The former because security plugins often introduce a variety of functions that can range greatly in how invasive they are, some can actually tamper with file permissions (which could cause database connection errors if they affect the config file), and the latter because another design plugin may interfere with BoldGrid.
Likewise, I’d consider double-checking “AddFunc Head & Footer Code” to see what this plugin is adding to the header and footer. I noticed you also have “GA Google Analytics” installed. It’s possible both of these plugins are adding extra code to your files (which could potentially cause code conflicts).
If you want to go even deeper I’d recommend duplicating your site in a local development environment and use something like XDebug to debug your PHP. This is the more advanced option, but debug information will provide more detailed errors and indicate which files precisely are causing problems.
