We installed and want to use this plugin on our multi-site. However, we see that the same options that are available to network admin are also available to site admin. We prefer to have a dashboard that allows the network admin to control the access to these features. Is there a way that the network admin can configure this plugin on behalf of site admins? Also, when I activate this plugin from wp cli, this plugin self-network activates rather than allowing me to choose network or site activation. Is there a way to control that so I can set it to site activation only. Thank you

    Hi Lisa-

Thanks for the great questions, and thanks for using W3 Total Cache.

I’ll try to answer each of your questions.

Is there a way that the network admin can configure this plugin on behalf of site admins?

Yes, this should normally be the default behavior, but if you’re seeing all of the individual options on each site, here’s how you can fix it.

In your Network Admin Dashboard, navigate to Performance > General Settings and scroll down to the Miscellaneous section, and check the option for Use single network configuration file for all sites.

This will allow the Network Admin to set the cache settings for all of the sites.

Is there a way to […] set it to site activation only?

Unfortunately due to the nature of the way W3 Total Cache works, it is only able to be installed at the Network level, not for individual sites.

    Thanks Jesse!
Unfortunately the under Performance > General Settings in the Miscellaneous section, the Use single network configuration file for all sites options was selected by default by install. Still, I can see the see all of the individual options on each site. Now what please?

    Thank you

    Hello Lisa,

    Thank you for your feedback.
Yes, the Use single network configuration option is enabled by default on the network activation of W3TC. This means that the configuration used on the main website will also be applied to all subsites.
Disabling this setting allows you to use a different configuration for each subsite.
As Jesse mentioned, in the multisite setup, the only way to activate W3TC is network activation.
So you cannot install the W3TC on a single subsite.
The individual options you are seeing on each website should be greyed out if the option Use single network configuration is enabled.
I hope this clarifies this and let me know if you have any other questions or if I misunderstood your inquiry.
    Thanks!

Thank you Marko. Unfortunately, I am not seeing the individual options greyed out on each website, and the option Use single network configuration is indeed enabled. What do you suggest from here?

    Hello Lisa,
It would be great if you could share some screenshots of what you are seeing on the W3TC settings page on one of the subsites.
This is how it supposed to look like for example (Please note that in this case the option Use single network configuration is enabled and you can see the “Use specific settings” button )

Thank you Marko. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. I send two pictures. One shows the menu the site admin sees (which is the same as the Super Admin’s), and the other is of a forbidden message when site admin clicks on General Settings. Yesterday, the forbidden message did not appear. Rather, the page page a site admins sees was displayed. Why do I see a forbidden message rather than the page shown in your pic? Thank you

    Hello Lisa,

This is related to the user privileges. So you need to change the privileges to be able to see the W3TC General Settings page.

    Hi Marko,
Thank you for the reply! I’m afraid it’s not possible to upgrade the role of the site admin any further or give the site admin any more authority as the site admin is already Administrator. The only privilege left to give the site Administrator is the Super Admin privilege. So, I think it may be the way the code is designed in such a way that when the site Administrator clicks the menu they see in the subsite that site Admin is redirected back to the parent site to see the page of the parent site.

In our multi-site, the subsites are not allowed to access the parent site dashboard.

    Hello Lisa,

    This is how W3TC works.
It appears that only the Super Admin is able to access it in your case.
    Thanks!

Thank you Marko for the reply. I guess we will not be able to use this plugin, unfortunately.
