In order to get the other widget areas to show up as Active, you need to add a widget area in the Customize > Design > Footer > Layout section. Once you’ve added a widget area, you’ll be able to add new widgets to the newly active area.
Thanks, Jesse. However, the issue is that when I add a widget areas, Footer Column 2, 3, etc. become active, but they are behaving like rows (not columns) stacked along the left margin of the footer. How do I get one widget on the left side, another on the right side?
The layout has both Rows and Columns you can add to your footer. To make sure that your new widget area is in the same row as your menu widget, make sure you’re in the same section as your existing widget when you add the new widget area:
