I have been trying to backup my site before updating the plugins, but keep getting a backup failed, unable to detect any fatal errors. I saw the article about having issues with dreamhost, which is where my site is. I have had successful backups up until Nov 30, 2021 and now it will not update, so I do not see it being the PHP setting causing this issue.

Generally when Total Upkeep backups fails without detecting any errors it means that the backup process was terminated directly by the web server, usually because of resource consumption.
One feature that we added to our WordPress backup plugin is the ability to change the compressor used for generating backup files which allows it to work in a variety of hosting environments.
We specifically added the System Zip compressor for our DreamHost users and in most cases changing the Backup Compressor settings to use System Zip allowed them to get backups working correctly.

I have it set to system zip for the compressor and the compression level set at the default 6. I do have it backing up to the web server, but only have 1 prior backup taking up space so I know that it is not space usage.

We really appreciate you sending over your backup log for us to review. Your web host, Dreamhost calculates total memory usage over a short period so it is possible you are hitting your resource cap for generating backups.
The next step is performing a file list analysis. You can activate this in the Backup Process settings.
One other thing you could try is generate a backup that excludes the uploads directory by adding
/wp-content/uploadsto the custom backup exclusion rules. Our suspicion is that you have a lot of content in your media library that is bloating the backup size.I hope this helps. Please reach back out to us with your questions and/or concerns.
