Total Upkeep freezes every time I try to backup my website when it’s saving archives to disk. Out of about 20 attempts on six or seven different occasions now, it’s only successfully created a backup twice. Once was when I first installed WordPress and imported my content from my other website, and the second was about a week after that.
It’s never functioned properly since day one. It did this the first time I tried to create a backup. I made sure to read the tutorial and perform a Pre-Flight Checklist, which I do every time, and it always says a green Yes.
It freezes when it’s saving archives to disk. Then after about 20 or 30 minutes it says, this backup is taking longer than expected, we won’t show this message anymore. Then after about an hour it says, backup successful, view details. But when I view the details there’s no new backup created.
I really need to try to get this solved immediately. Can someone please help me? Thank you.

Thanks for reaching out, I’m sorry to hear about the frustration and inconsistent success creating backups. I know that keeping backups reliably is a major importance to your website, and we’ll do everything we can to get you fixed up.
First, I’ll give you the most common way to fix this. Navigate to Total Upkeep > Settings > Backup Process and change the Compressor to System Zip. Most of the time, this will resolve the issue where your backup freezes during the “saving archive to disk” step.
If you’re still having trouble after changing your compressor, we can find out more details about what went wrong by examining your logs. Navigate to Total Upkeep > Tools > Logs and locate the

I was about to post exactly the same question – I will try System Zip as well to see if it fixes the issue.
Jesse, I also noticed something else about my process which may or may not be helpful for you to know:
After a failed backup, if I deactivated a plugin (it could be any plugin, as I repeated this test on different days using different plugins) then tried a new backup, it succeeds. In fact, even just deactivating and then immediately reactivating a plugin prior to backup is sufficient for it to succeed.
But then on the next scheduled backup several hours later, the backup would fail again in the same way, with the 2nd last line in the log always being “Starting to close the zip file”
Anyway, I’ll let you know how System Zip has affected it after the next few scheduled backups.
This gets curiouser… System Zip is reliable in that backups no longer freeze. But I’m not so sure that they always complete successfully.
This morning I didn’t get a backup confirmation email, so I logged on and found that the backup had completed, and I was able to download it and confirm that the zip archive was readable.
But on checking the log, I found it was incomplete (see below). Also, sometimes when I check the Backups tab, and View Details, some of those backups do not show the “More info Show” link at all. I suspect this is related, but that’s only a suspicion at this stage.
So here’s last night’s log anyway, for what otherwise appears to be a successful backup:
