We purchased Total Upkeep Premium for our website, and we’re able to make regular backups with no problem. But, when we try to download any of the backups using “Download to Local Machine” button or the “Get Download Link” button, nothing happens. Clicking the “Download to Local Machine” button opens up a new browser tab (same in Chrome and Firefox), but the tab is blank. No error message is displayed and now file downloads. The archives are only around 115 to 150 megabytes while zipped. For context, we had this site hosted with Google, then moved to DreamHost. This error has existed on both hosts, before and after we migrated the site.

In order to troubleshoot, I’d like to see if you can do me a favor and check your browser console for any errors when you click either of those buttons. Here’s a quick explanation on how to open your browser console:
Once you have your console open, click on Download to Local Machine and Get Download Link and let us know if any errors show up there.
August 25, 2020 at 2:50 pm #26132RebeccaGuestHi. I too have the same problem. cannot “download to local machine” in Chrome or Firefox. Page error in chrome is this:- “admin-ajax.php might be temporarily down or it might have been moved permanently to another web address”. In Firefox the page is blank. I followed your instructions to see any errors I may have in “inspect – console” and had a load of error relating to “SameSite” errors. Screenshot below file:///C:/Users/hello/Desktop/samesite%20error.webp Could this be causing the failure to be able to download to local machine? I´m pretty new to all this so any help would be great. Thanks.

Sorry to hear about the difficulty downloading backups. You can safely ignore the warnings about “SameSite,” that’s just a chrome-based warning that’s not related to this issue.
Since you are seeing the error about admin-ajax.php, I’d suspect one of two possibilities.
- Your backup file is large, and taking longer than your host’s Apache or NGINX configuration allows for a web-based download. If this is the case, I recommend downloading your backup using FTP or your web host’s file manager tool.
- Your access to admin-ajax.php is being blocked by a firewall or a security plugin. Try temporarily deactivating any security plugins you’re using and then downloading the backup again.
If you’re not using any security plugins, check with your host to see if they’re using an application firewall like ModSec, and if they can see any errors in the Apache or NGINX logs regarding your admin-ajax.php interface.
