November 2, 2017 at 12:00 pm in reply to: We just added an SSL certificate to our site and now our Boldgrid is no longer working (it says its not secure) – how do I fix this? #23483JohnPaul BMemberHello JFB,
Thank you for contacting us about fixing a BoldGrid site after adding an SSL. Installing an SSL does not make any actual changes to your site, you must also change your site name from http to https.
If you are still having issues you may have to do a find and replace in your database to update the URL. There are also many WordPress plugins available for implementing an SSL, that will handle this for you.
Ensure any images or resources on the page are being called in over https, since it will break the security chain. For example, if you have an image on your page from an “http” source, it will cause this security message.
Thank you,

JohnPaul BMemberHello Sarah,
Thank you for contacting us about changing the menu color in the Haven theme. There are a couple options:
First Option: Change the menu color in the customizer using “Custom JS & CSS”
- Click Customize
- Click Advanced
- Click Custom JS & CSS
- Under Custom Theme CSS click Open Editor
- Enter the following code to make the menu red:
.navbar-nav>li>a { color: #ff0000 !important;}
- Change the hex value “#ff0000” to whatever color you want the menu to be
Second Option: Make a Child Theme and Override the color
- Setup a Child theme (here is a helpful link to a Haven Child theme)
- Then, you can use Google Chrome Developer Tools to Customize CSS
- You can then modify this line (110) to change the child theme to any color in the palette.
Let us know if you have any further questions.

Thank you for contacting us about adding drop-down menus to a main menu. Here is a link to our helpful guide on Working with Menus in BoldGrid. It explains how to add menus, then you can drag the menu to the right to make it a drop down of the menu above it.

JohnPaul BMemberHello Andrew,
Thank you for contacting us about deleting the Attributions page. When I checked the IP address of your site, I can see you are hosted with InMotion. Since they are one of our Recommended Hosts, you can get a premium connect key from them. This premium key allows you to disable the Attribution page in the customizer by going to:
- Customize.
- Advanced.
- Footer Settings.
- Then you can select the attributions you want to hide in the Attribution Control section.
Let us know if you have any further questions.
Thank you,
John-Paul
JohnPaul BMemberHello Charles,

October 19, 2017 at 2:20 pm in reply to: We already have a domain with Hostgator; can I use Boldgrid with Hostgator? #23553JohnPaul BMemberHello Sarah,
Thank you for contacting us about using BoldGrid with HostGator. Yes, you can use BoldGrid with any host including HostGator. Just install WordPress, then install the BoldGrid plugin. Let us know if you have any further questions.
Thank you,

JohnPaul BMemberHello brandsi,
Thank you for contacting us. I recommend enabling debugging as it may provide a more detailed error message. Disable your other 3rd party plugins. An easy way to accomplish this is to rename the /plugins folder, then rename it back after testing. Try testing with a default theme installed such as “twenty seventeen”. Check your servers error logs for additional messages. Check your mod_security log for any blocks there. Try renaming your .htaccess file, which will disable the rules for testing.
Thank you,
John-Paul
October 19, 2017 at 9:43 am in reply to: When is Cloud Access getting full BoldGrid integration? #23555JohnPaul BMemberHello Brian,
Thank you for contacting us. That is something best discussed with CloudAccess, since it would have to be set up on their side. But, at this time you can manually install BoldGrid, which only takes a few minutes. We are happy to help you troubleshoot any installation problems you may experience.
Thank you,
John-Paul
October 12, 2017 at 6:44 pm in reply to: How can I have a page with a search widget, but not in the header? #23586JohnPaul BMemberHello Jeff,
Thank you for contacting us about using a page with a search widget. You should create a page first. Then, add a search widget to the page by going to: Customize->Widgets->Select the area->Click Add a Widget->Search
You can Add the Page to the Menu, but there is no “built-in” way to replace the link with a graphic. This means you would have to custom-code/develop a solution.
Thank you,
John-Paul
JohnPaul BMemberHello Dan,
Thank you for contacting us. Sorry to hear about the experience you are having, we are looking into the login issues now. The login is just for tracking your BoldGrid Keys, we do not have a ticket system. But, you can always post a question here in our public forums anonymously.
I recommend testing with the Phone View option to verify how it will look. Can you provide a link to the site for us to test further?
Thank you,
John-Paul
October 5, 2017 at 3:08 pm in reply to: Functionality test has failed Boldgrid Backup on GCP help! #23601JohnPaul BMemberHello Jeff,
Thank you for contacting us about a failed test when using the backup plugin. The first test “Home directory writable? No” indicates you may not have permission to create/edit files there. Due to this, I recommend checking your file/folder permissions to ensure you are able to “Write” to the Home directory.
Thank you,
John-Paul
JohnPaul BMemberHello Sam,
Thank you for contacting us about issues activating BoldGrid. Sorry to hear about the troubles you are experiencing. In our tests, everything is working at this time. I recommend enabling debugging in WordPress as it may provide additional errors or clues. Review your server’s error logs for additional notices or records. Your host should be able to help you access these. Test with a default theme such as “twenty seventeen”. Also, try disabling your 3rd party plugins. This should help you narrow down the specific cause further.
Thank you,
John-Paul
JohnPaul BMemberHello Peter,
Thank you for contacting us about adjusting how page elements move around when resizing. Since BoldGrid and WordPress are responsive by default, they will automatically adjust to the size of the screen.
While there is no built-in way to change what content the site serves based on the width, you can adjust the width of sections so they display better on multiple devices.
I recommend using the Desktop, Tablet, and Phone Views in the Editor to preview how it will display on different size screents/browsers. You can then adjust the size or width of the elements in the BoldGrid Page/Post Editor to fit on different screens more seamlessly.
Thank you,
John-Paul
JohnPaul BMemberHello Philip & Spencer,
Thank you for contacting us about BoldGrid functionality. Yes, since BoldGrid is powered by WordPress it includes the built-in tools. For example, you can allow user registration and set group Roles and Capabilities. There are many Google Map plugins already available for connecting to their API, but you can also custom code this yourself. The WordPress Codex is the best source for learning how to code with WordPress.
You can also see the Theme Requirements, as well as the Configuration and API Reference in the official BoldGrid Documentation page.
Thank you,
John-Paul
JohnPaul BMemberHello TheFolk11,
Thank you for contacting us about adding text above the title on the Resolve theme. I think your first method is was the best option. Yes, you can create a widget without a title.
You can change the alignment with HTML by changing to the “Text” tab, then using the following:
<div align=”right”>
This is some text!
</div>You can change the background color, by using the “Colors” link in the Customizer. Then changing the corresponding palette. Since it is in the Header, it will appear on all pages by default.
Let us know if you have any further questions.
Thank you,
John-Paul
JohnPaul BMemberHello Bill,
Thank you for contacting about the definitions of user roles. Since BoldGrid is powered by WordPress, it uses standard WordPress Roles and Capabilities. Here is a summary from the WordPress Codex:
- Super Admin – somebody with access to the site network administration features and all other features. See the Create a Network article.
- Administrator (slug: ‘administrator’) – somebody who has access to all the administration features within a single site.
- Editor (slug: ‘editor’) – somebody who can publish and manage posts including the posts of other users.
- Author (slug: ‘author’) – somebody who can publish and manage their own posts.
- Contributor (slug: ‘contributor’) – somebody who can write and manage their own posts but cannot publish them.
- Subscriber (slug: ‘subscriber’) – somebody who can only manage their profile.
Thank you,
John-Paul

JohnPaul BMemberHello Ted,
Thank you for contacting us about adding linked images in the header. You can do this by adding a widget to the header area. Here are the steps:
- Log into your BoldGrid Dashboard.
- Click the Customize link.
- Click Widgets.
- Roll your mouse over the available areas (such as Above Header, Below Navigation, etc.) and click the one you want to add a link to. Keep in mind the widget areas will differ based on your specific theme.
- Click the “Add a Widget” button.
- Click the Visual Editor link.
- You will then see the visual editor and can click the Add Media button to upload an image. You can also click the image and Insert a link to make the image take you to another URL.
If you disable the BoldGrid plugin everything should remain, but you will not have access to the BoldGrid’s advanced editor features.
Thank you,
John-Paul
September 7, 2017 at 9:09 am in reply to: How do I create a multi page blog with posts organised in different pages according to category? #23745JohnPaul BMemberHello Monique,
Thank you for contacting us about creating a block with multiple category pages. Yes, you can create category pages such as “Lifestyle” and “Travel Tips”. Then, when you create a blog post, just assign it to one of the categories.
You can add the category pages as menu items if necessary.
Thank you,
John-Paul

- Scroll down to the Gallery and click one of the images, then click the pencil on the top center of the gallery. This will bring up the Edit Gallery page where you can “Add to Gallery” or uncheck images to remove them.

Thank you,
John-Paul
JohnPaul BMemberHello Tom,
Thank you for contacting us. Try disabling your other 3rd party plugins as a test, since I have seen them conflict BoldGrid. Enable debugging as it may provide a more specific error message. Also check with your hosting provider, to see if there are any error logs associated with the problem you have.
If your problems persist, you can submit a bug report from your WordPress Dashboard. Click Dashboard, scroll down to the BoldGrid Feedback section and choose Bug Report.
Thank you,
John-Paul
JohnPaul BMemberHello roithner,
Thank you for contacting us. We are happy to help, but will need some additional information. What theme are you using? Can you provide a link to your site for us to test further?
Thank you,
John-Paul
JohnPaul BMemberHello TheFolk11,
Most likely the text color was set in the “Editor” when the text was added. I recommend highlighting the pencil over to the right to determine which one allows you to edit the area you want to lighten. Then, click the pencil and a pop-up menu will ask if you want to “Edit the page.” Click the Go there now button. You will then be in the page Editor. If you are seeing the page code, switch to the “Visual” tab.
If you are not seeing the section, it may have been added as a widget. You should be able to edit that by clicking Customize, then Widgets. Roll your mouse over the area links (such as Below Site Title, Above Site Title, and Footer Center ) to see if one includes your text area. Click the one that corresponds to your text and you should then see the widget listed. Click it to bring it up in an editor.
Thank you,
John-Paul
August 25, 2017 at 9:02 am in reply to: When I paste a link to my BoldGrid site on Facebook, it shows an image and text from the original theme and not my modified version #23799JohnPaul BMemberHello David,
I recommend using the Facebook debugger tool to troubleshoot this further. You can enter your website address and Facebook will show you what it is crawling on the page.
You can use the Sharing Debugger to see the information that is used when your website content is shared on Facebook, Messenger and other places. The Batch Invalidator will let you refresh this information for multiple URLs at the same time. Open Graph markup lets you take control over how your website content appears to others.
Ensure you have “Published” your modified site Posts/Pages. If you are working with a “Staged” site, make sure it has been deployed.
Thank you,
John-Paul
JohnPaul BMemberHello Corey,
Thank you for contacting us about adding a PDF/Word Form for a service. I recommend using WPForms since it is included with BoldGrid, and has pre-made forms you can easily use.
This will email you the information that is entered. There may be 3rd party options available for using PDF of Word, but I was unable to locate any popular ones.
Thank you,
John-PaulJohnPaul BMemberHello,
Thank you for contacting us about changing the Opacity of the top area in the Venetian theme. In our tests, adjusting the opacity also made the text fade. We were able to make a solid background color by adding the following CSS code in the Advanced editor. Here are the steps:
- Log into BoldGrid
- Click Customize
- Click Advanced
- Click Custom JS & CSS
- Open the Editor for Custom Theme CSS
- Paste the following below any existing code:
.boldgrid-section, .site-header .boldgrid-section { background-color:blue;}
You can then change the “blue” in the code to any color you want. Here is a list of available CSS colors.
Thank you,
John-Paul
JohnPaul BMemberHello,
Thank you for contacting us about changing the background image into a slider. The Background tab in the customizer allows you to change the background image and how it displays. There you can choose if you want the background image to be Fixed, Scroll, or use a Parallax effect (slides at a different rate than your content ).
If you want a slider gallery as the background image, there is no “built-in” way to accomplish this in BoldGrid. But, since BoldGrid is powered by WordPress there are several Background Slider plugins available for adding this functionality.
Keep in mind with any 3rd party plugin, you will have to test it to ensure it is compatible with your specific site.
Thank you,
John-PaulJohnPaul BMemberHello testmonkey,
In our tests, your website displays the same way in: Safari, Chrome, and Firefox.
BoldGrid themes are responsive and will adjust based on the size of your browser window, and your settings in Safari. Since browser settings can be personalized, I recommend checking your Safari settings. For example, you may have changed the font size/zoom setting in Safari. Also, ensure the windows are the same size when you are testing since this can affect how your site displays.
Thank you,
John-Paul
JohnPaul BMemberHello Dre,
Thank you for contacting us about serving up a widget based on the device that is viewing. Unfortunately, there is no “built-in” way to accomplish this, so you would have to custom-develop/code a solution. A possible solution would be to use a “div” to hide the current title row and create a second one for mobile, with inline styling of the new color. Then, essentially show/hide sections of pages based on the “responsive utilities” in bootstrap?
Thank you,
John-Paul
August 3, 2017 at 4:05 pm in reply to: How do I publish my website when it doesn’t update when I click save and publish? #23946JohnPaul BMemberHello,
Thank you for contacting us. If you are seeing an older version of your site when you visit it, you may have to clear your browser cache.
Check that your DNS is correctly pointed to your web host. For example, you should point to their “nameservers” and ensure the ‘A record’ points to your accounts IP address. Your host should be able to help you verify this.
If this is a newly registered website or you made DNS changes recently it can take up to 24 hours to update globally. You can begin working immediately with a “hosts file modification” that points your URL to your server’s IP address.
Thank you,
John-Paul
August 3, 2017 at 2:59 pm in reply to: How can I make the footer a different color from the header…or transparent so the background shows through? #23953JohnPaul BMemberHello Neal,
Thank you for contacting us. The steps can differ based on your specific site and theme, but I recommend trying the “Colors” tool in the Customizer. Clicking the color blocks will highlight the affected area, and allow you to change the color or transparency.
If you want to change the color of a footer Widget, you can go to Customize–>Widgets. Select the footer widget area (such as “Footer Center”), then select your widget. You should then be able to modify the widget using the editor.
Thank you,
John-Paul
JohnPaul BMemberHello SGalHC,
Thank you for contacting us. The “Template” options listed under “Page Attributes” are based on what the theme offers.
The easiest way is to use elements from other themes on a page is: Create a new page, then click the “Add GridBlock” button next to the “Add Media” button. This will allow you to choose the pieces of the other Themes that you want to use and easily add them to the page.
Alternately, you can customize the Template Hierarchy to add additional options. Keep in mind this will require you to develop a custom solution.
Thank you,
John-Paul
JohnPaul BMemberHello Luis,
Thank you for contacting us. You can sign up for an account at BoldGrid Central and get a license. But, keep in mind the BoldGrid plugin will need to access the internet to pull resources such as additional themes, or gridblocks.
Thank you,
John-Paul
JohnPaul BMemberHello mark_pr,

JohnPaul BMemberHello BTierney,
If you are familiar with coding, you may be able to add the section using the text editor. For example, you could add a ‘p tag‘ to the section you want to add text to.
We are happy to help you troubleshoot further, but will need some additional information. Can you provide a link to the site and let us know how you made two columns within one section?
Thank you,
John-Paul
